National Video Conferencing Event Calendar Launched

This week we have been working to create a more centralised way of informing KAREN users across the country of any events relating to video conferencing within New Zealand.

By introducing the National Video Conferencing Event Calendar to the AVCC site, this will bring together information on all public events, training sessions, seminars,  and lectures utilising video conferencing into one central calendar.

By centralising this information we hope and anticipate that this will spark two major things:

  1. More users in the KAREN community will become aware of public meetings available to attend from their video conferencing endpoints.
  2. Universities and CRI's will look at broadcasting public seminars and events of interest to other KAREN members who are able to join via video conference.

Within the next few weeks, we will also be enabling users to create accounts to login to the AVCC website and allowing them permissions to create and update meetings to enable information to be easily added to this National Calendar.

This new calendar can be found in the Community Section of the navigation bar at the top of the AVCC website. If you would like to add an event in the meantime, please feel free to contact us on 0800 666 889 or email our helpdesk.

Capacity of the KAREN Bridge

As many of you are aware, we have seen a significant increase in the use of participants on the KAREN HD Bridge. This has been great to see over the past couple of months as people have embraced video conferencing as a viable means of collaborating around the country and across the world.

Along with this increase on usage comes many new obstacles that we are starting to see appear, particularly the issue caused by the Bridge reaching its peak capacity.

At its current state, the KAREN Bridge can only support at any given time a maximum of:

  • 12 video connections
  • 12 audio/telephone connections
  • 24 web streaming viewers

The image to the right (click to enlarge) is designed to visually represent the way in which the bridge operates and assigns ports.

If you are experiencing issues connecting to the bridge, it may be because it is already at peak capacity at that time, but if you are uncertain call us on 0800 666 889 and we can help make sure there is not another problem causing your connection to be refused.

REANNZ are currently in the process of looking at ways to increase the capacity of the KAREN Bridge to allow more participants to be online.

First poll is now closed

12 May 2009

On our opening day (the 24th of April) we launched a poll asking our visitors what their most used video conferencing solution was. Today we have closed this poll and posted the final results. The top 3 solutions voted by users (in order) were H323 Room, EVO and H323 Desktop.

The results from this poll of course, are not scientific, but they still provide us with interesting insight into the diversity of solutions being used.

In the future we shall be conducting more of these casual polls, and this exact poll will be run again in six to eight months.

Lastly, the AVCC would like to thank everyone who voted, and we hope to see you as regular visitors to our site.
