Ordered the new Microsoft Lifecam Cinema 720p USB webcam and initial thoughts and views are positive. It seems to handle the low light conditions exceptionally well and the clarity is very crisp. Seems to be quite a good lens in the webcam expecially for the size of the unit.
Compared to the Logitech Quickcam 9000 Pro, I did a side by side image analysis and the Lifecam Cinema did pick up more detail especially from background objects as well as the primary objects in view.
So far I have successfully tested it on KAREN Video Desktop & Mirial. However it did not seem to like Access Grid no matter how I tried to setup the webcam to get Access Grid to see it. I'll look further into this to see if I can get it working, but from previous experience with Microsoft webcam and Access Grid, it doesn't look promising.
Built in microphone seems to hold up well. It is certainly not a good as wearing a headset but will definitely do the job adequetely if all you have is the webcam and nothing else to use as a microphone.
Reading reviews, not only does it work on Windows, but also works on Mac and Linux (Ubuntu), although it does currently produce a sluggish framerate under Mac.
I have added more detailed information about this webcam to the Hardware Database section.
Overall, a very good webcam for only around $114 +GST NZD.
